    TRANSCRIPT

REPORTER: DR. BARNARD, YOU'VE JUST RETURNED FROM GROOTE SCHUUR. CAN YOU TELL US THE LATEST CONDITION OF YOUR PATIENT?

BARNARD: WELL, I FEEL THAT THE PATIENT'S EXTREMELY WELL SINCE IT'S ONLY THE SECOND DAY AFTER SURGERY. ALL THE EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT THE HEART'S MAINTAINING CIRCULATION VERY WELL. ALL THE ORGANS THAT WERE AFFECTED BY THE HEART FAILURE, THEIR FUNCTIONS' IMPROVING, SO I THINK WE CAN BE VERY HAPPY ABOUT HIS CONDITION AT THE MOMENT.

REPORTER: DR. BARNARD, WHEN DO YOU EXPECT MRS. BLAIBERG TO BE ABLE TO VISIT HER HUSBAND?

BARNARD: WELL, I MEAN SHE COULD GO AND VISIT HIM NOW IF SHE WANTED TO, BUT WE WOULD PREFER HER TO WAIT ANOTHER DAY OR SO BEFORE SHE GOES IN.

REPORTER: MRS. HAUPT, YOU MADE A DECISION THAT BROUGHT YOU THE SYMPATHY OF THE WHOLE WORLD. WHAT WAS IN YOUR MIND WHEN YOU CAME TO THAT MOMENT OF DECISION?

MRS. HAUPT SENIOR: I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST TO DO, AS CHRISTIANS, OF COURSE I WOULD HAVE DONE IT TO ANYBODY. I'M VERY HAPPY TO SEE THE MAN'S GETTING ON VERY WELL.

REPORTER: MRS. HAUPT JUNIOR, IT WAS NOT AN EASY MOMENT OF DECISION FOR YOU.

MRS. HAUPT JUNIOR: NO IT WASN'T. IT WAS A TERRIBLE SHOCK WHEN THEY TOLD ME HE WAS IN A BAD STATE, THAT HE WON'T COME THROUGH, SO THEY ASKED ME IF THEY CAN DO IT, WITH THE HEART TRANSFER. I SAID TO THEM, THEY MUST TRY AND FIGHT FOR HIS LIFE BEFORE THEY CAN DO IT. SO THE DOCTORS SAID I MUST THINK IT OVER. WHEN THEY CAME BACK THEY ASKED ME, SO I HAD TO SIGN FOR IT. I'M VERY SAD ABOUT IT, BUT I'M VERY GLAD THE MAN IS GETTING WELL ON MY HUSBAND'S HEART. I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN THE FIRST HEART TRANSFER, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW IT WOULD BE HIS HEART THAT WOULD BE, THAT WOULD GO IN DOCTOR BLAIBERG'S HEART. BUT I'M VERY GLAD THAT IT'S BEEN A VERY SUCCESSFUL, AND I HOPE THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT ME, AND I'M VERY SAD THAT WE HAD TO....(WEEPS)

MRS. HAUPT SENIOR: CLIVE WAS A VERY GOOD BOY, AND HE USED TO HELP ME WHEN I WAS I BED, AND I WAS VERY GLAD THAT HE COULD GIVE HIS HEART FOR ANOTHER MAN TO LIVE. HE HAD NO OTHER FRIENDS BUT HIS WIFE, AND US. HE WAS A VERY GOOD BOY. WHY DID HE DIE? WHY DOES GOD TAKE THE BEST AND KEEP THE WORST BEHIND?......(WEEPS).
