    THE GOVERNMENT OF DAHOMEY, THE FORMER FRENCH WEST AFRICAN TERRITORY, HAS LAUNCHED A 20-DAY ROAD REPAIRING OPERATION TO HELP MARKET AND DISTRIBUTE FARM PRODUCE.

    THE PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER, M. CHABIKAD WATCHED THE OPERATION IN ATTACORA AND NITTITINGO IN THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY. THERE, VILLAGERS WERE WORKING ON ROAD SURFACING, UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF MINISTRY OFFICIALS.

    EARLIER THIS YEAR A SIMILAR OPERATION WAS SPONSORED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO INCREASE CROPS. MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, PROVINCIAL PREFECTS AND OTHER OFFICIALS PERSONALLY SOWED COTTON AND PLANTED GROUNDNUTS ON SELECTED PLOTS.

    THE COUNTRY DEPENDS ON FARMING - MAIZE, MILLET, GROUNDNUTS AND LIVESTOCK, AND EXPORTS PALM OIL AND KERNELS.

    DAHOMEY BECAME INDEPENDENT IN AUGUST 1960. BECAUSE OF THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY, THE GOVERNMENT, UNDER THE PRESIDENT, CHRISTOPHER SOGLO, INTRODUCED A NEW SERIES OF AUSTERITY MEASURES TWO MONTHS AGO.
