Background: A group of 37 Israeli troops surrendered to Egyptian forces on the Suez Canal on Saturday, tired and bedraggled after being holed up in their strongpoint on the Eastern Bank for eight days.

The psychological impact on their Egyptian captors was considerable -- in 1967, the Egyptians had surrendered in thousands to the Israelis.

This time the Egyptians showed great curiosity in the surrender operation, which was supervised by the International Red Cross.

Watched by reporters and cameramen, the Red Cross officials spoke through loudhailers from the Canal's west bank to the Israelis holed up on the other side. They crossed the Canal in a dinghy and brought back two Israelis to discuss the surrender terms; then the rest of the Israelis came across the Sue Canal to become captives of the Egyptians.

The Israeli soldiers looked weary and depressed, while the Egyptians were in high spirits, holding up the surrendered Israeli flag before raising their own flag.

The surrender came as Israel announced it had taken 414 Arab prisoners, including 58 officers, on both war fronts since the outbreak of hostilities.

At the same time, Egyptian armour and mechanised infantry were mobilising for a heavy attack along the length of the Suez Canal front -- possibly to ease the pressure on Egypt's Syrian allies in the north.
