  • Description

Reigning world football champions, West Germany, have maintained their unbeaten record during their current tour of South America with a 2-0 win over Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday (8 June).

West Germany will also play Brazil and Mexico during their tour.

SYNOPSIS: West Germany, playing in the white shorts from right to left, have already qualified for the 1978 World Cup finals as current holders. Already on their tour they have beaten Argentina by three goals to one. Argentina is the only other country sure of qualifying for next year's finals as it is the host country.

West Germany will play the opening game in the finals in the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires on June the first, and they're using this tour to get used to South American conditions. Despite being without their former captain, Franz Beckenbauer, who is missing his first overseas tour since 1970, the West Germans were too good for Uruguay.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Flohe gathered a pass after a throw in and beat Uruguay's goalkeeper Correa.

In the second half Uruguay came close to equalizing when a shot from Carrasco hit the bar, but West Germany sealed the game when Dieter Muller scored in the last minute.
