Background: THERE HAVE BEEN REPEATED DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE INDIAN CAPITAL, NEW DELHI THIS WEEK AGAINST PAKISTAN, AND AGAINST INDONESIA -- ONE OF THE NATIONS SUPPORTING PAKISTAN IN THE PRESENT CONFLICT. IN NEW DELHI PUBLIC MEETINGS HAVE BEEN HELD -- AT WHICH VARIOUS SPEAKERS HAVE OUTLINED THE VIEWS OF POLITICAL GROUPS IN INDIA TOWARDS THE CONFLICT. TURKEY HAS EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR PAKISTAN -- AND ON FRIDAY HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS MARCHED THROUGH ISTANBUL IN DEMONSTRATIONS CONDEMNING INDIA.

ON FRIDAY THE SOCIALIST PARTY OF INDIA AND OTHER STUDENT GROUPS ORGANISED A DEMONSTRATION IN NEW DELHI, FIRST OUTSIDE THE INDONESIAN EMBASSY -- AND THEN AT THE PAKISTAN HIGH COMMISSION. BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE HELD, A NOTE WAS SENT TO THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. SHASTRI, INFORMING HIM OF THE STUDENTS' INTENTIONS. THE NOTE SAID THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING PART WOULD BE MUSLIMS. SPEAKERS CONDEMNED THE "HITLER-LIKE" POLICIES OF PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN OF PAKISTAN, WHILE THE CROWD CHANTED SLOGANS SUCH AS "SUKARNO AND AYUB.-- CHINESE STOOGES..."
A NUMBER OF POLITICAL PARTIES WERE REPRESENTED AT A MEETING IN NEW DELHI LATER ON FRIDAY. IT WAS HELD AT THE RAMLILA GROUNDS -- AND WAS ADDRESSED BY MRS. INDIRA GHANDI, DAUGHTER OF INDIA'S FORMER PRIME MINISTER, MR. NEHRU. MRS. GHANDI APPEALED TO THE PEOPLE TO KEEP UP THEIR MORALE -- AND TO SUPPORT THE ARMY.

IN TURKEY ON FRIDAY STUDENTS MARCHED THROUGH ISTANBUL CONDEMNING "IMPERIALIST INDIA'S AGGRESSION" AGAINST PAKISTAN. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY THE NATIONAL TURKISH STUDENTS UNION. TURKEY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT SHE SUPPORTS THE UNITED NATIONS CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE, BUT IS READY TO SUPPORT PAKISTAN. A TURKISH GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID ON FRIDAY THAT TURKEY AS FAVOURABLY CONSIDERED A PAKISTAN REQUEST TO SPEED UP AND INCREASE THE DELIVERY OF TURKISH ARMS AND EQUIPMENT. A DELEGATION OF TURKISH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS VISITED THE PAKISTAN EMBASSY EARLIER IN THE WEEK AND HANDED IN A BOUQUET WITH THE WORDS "TURKISH YOUTH IS PROUD TO BE ON YOUR SIDE...."
