  • Description

Using three drivers, the West German Zakspeed Ford Escort team scored an upset win in the Wynn's 1000 kilometre (6,200 miles) saloon car race at Johannesburg's Kyalami track on Saturday (1 November).

The German team originally started with two drivers .. Hans Heyer and Peter Hennige .. but they were joined by ace German Formula One driver Jochen Mass after his Capri had retired with a broken engine after about three hours of the event.

The Zakspeed car's unofficial victory margin was 15 laps. The surprise element was the ease of their win over the heavily favoured BMW works teams.

Second place went to another Formula One driver, Sweden's Ronnie Peterson, and Hans Joachim Stuck, in a full works BMW. Derek Bell and Brian Redman filled third place in a privately owned BMW.

The giant killing Escort is the same car that won the West German Saloon car championship recently.

Jochen Mass set the fastest time for Kyalami's long straight in his Capri before it retired. He reached 160 m.p.h. (256.8 kilometres per hour).
