Background: Fresh violence erupted in Reggio Calabria last night (Tuesday) after an uneasy calm had interrupted a week of rioting in the Southern Italian town. A policeman was shot in the chest during a two-hour battle.
Large parts of the city were in the hands of rioters during the night while bomb explosions were heard, pistol shots range out and fires crackled.
The violence follows demands by citizens of Reggio that the city be made capital of the newly created Calabria region instead of the smaller town of Catanzaro.
Thousands of policemen have been drafted to Reggio since three policemen were shots by rioters earlier this week.
Reggio's town hall was set ablaze by demonstrators, but the fire was controlled before it spread beyond the ground floor.
