Background: The fishmongers of Paris gave a huge feast today (Wednesday) to about 40,000 lucky people.

They provided 15 tons of fish, mountains of mussels, hundreds of pounds (KGS) of shrimps, row upon row of snails and casks of best white wine. Tens of thousands of Parisians crowded round the 250 yards (220 metres) of buffets set up in the city's central market to take part in "Operation Neptune," as the monster meal was christened.

The object of the feast, organised by the promotion committee for fish eating, was to give the French a taste for fish again. Fish sales have dropped since the Torrey Canyon oil tanker wreck last April, which spewed oil into the sea of the French and British coasts.

Another reason for the massive drop in sea-food sales was the Catholic Church's lifting of its ban on eating meat on Friday.
