  • Description

BRAZIL MARCHED RELENTLESSLY FORWARD TOWARDS THE 1970 WORLD CUP BY DEFEATING VENEZUELA ON SUNDAY FOR THE SECOND TIME IN GROUP II QUALIFYING MATCHES. WHEN THEY MET IN VENEZUELA, THE SCORE WAS 5-0; THIS TIME THE BRAZILIANS WON 6-0.

VENEZUELA KICKED OFF, PLAYING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, BUT BRAZIL QUICKLY WENT INTO THE OFFENSIVE AND HARRIED THE VENEZUELAN DEFENCE. SOON AFTERWARDS TOSTAO CAME THROUGH TO SCORE FOR BRAZIL IN THE 7TH MINUTE.

A FREE KICK GAVE VENEZUELA A CHANCE, BUT THE BALL WENT OVER THE BRAZILIAN GOAL. BRAZIL ATTACKED AGAIN AND TOSTAO SCORED TWO GOALS WITHIN THREE MINUTES TO GET HIS HAT-TRICK AND PUT BRAZIL THREE UP.

JAIRZINHO SCORED BRAZIL'S FOURTH (NOT ON FILM) AND VENEZUELA CONCEDED A PENALTY WHICH GAVE PELE THE CHANCE TO MAKE IT 5-0 SECONDS BEFORE HALF-TIME.

IN THE SECOND HALF VENEZUELA WERE UNLUCKY NOT TO SCORE FROM A CORNER, BUT BRAZIL REMAINED ON TOP AND PELE SCORED AGAIN TO MAKE IT 6-0.

BUT DESPITE BRAZIL'S UNBEATEN RECORD IN GROUP II AND THEIR TREMENDOUS GOAL-SCORING (22 FOR, 2 AGAINST, IN 5 MATCHES) THEY HAVE NOT YET QUALIFIED FOR THE MEXICO TOURNAMENT. PARAGUAY ALSO WON ON SUNDAY AND CAN FORCE A PLAY-OFF IF THEY CAN BEAT BRAZIL NEXT SUNDAY (31 AUGUST). BUT ON PRESENT FORM BRAZIL SEEM FAVOURITES FOR THE 1970 WORLD CUP.
