Background: Athletics - and the 3,000 metre steeplechase event at Third All-African games, being held in Algiers, was the first event of the games in which one country collected all the medals. Three Kenyans were lead by Henry Rono.

SYNOPSIS: Fifteen athletes started the 3,000 metre steeplechase event on Tuesday (25 July).

The event featured Kenya's phenomenal long-distance track star, Henry Rono, looking for his second gold medal.

Spectators were watching the man who has been called the best long-distance runner in the world. Rono immediately lead the field wearing number 353. He said before the race that he thought the steeplechase would be easier than the 10,000 metre event in which he won his first gold medal.

He maintained his lead throughout the race followed closely by his brother Kiprotich Rono and team mate Munyala. In the 10,000 metres Rono had romped to victory after his closest rival, Ethiopian Rivul Miruts Yifter, hobbled from the track with a pulled calf muscle. 25-year-old Henry Rono already holds four world records.

His winning time was 8 minutes, 15.82 seconds, ten seconds outside his world record. Munyala and Rono's brother came second and third, making Kenya the first country at the Games to made such a clean sweep.
