  • Description

Air piracy is a major topic of discussion at a conference which opened at Abidjan in Ivory Coast on Thursday (15 June). France and fourteen African countries are represented at the meeting which brings together members of the Agency for Aviation Security in French speaking African Countries--ASECNA.

The meeting was held as airlines around the world prepared for a one-day taken strike by pilots on monday (19 June) in protest at what they see as a lack of action by world governments in dealing with the problem of hi-jacking.

Countries represented at the conference are the Central African Republic, Congo, France, Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Gabon, Upper Volta, Mauritania, the Malagasy Republic, Niger, Senegal, Chad, Cameroun, Mali and Togo.

ASECNA was set up twelve years ago. It meets from time to time to discuss ways in which security can be improved o aircraft owned by the countries taking part. The present conference in Abidjan is discussing resolution passed at a meeting of the organisation in Paris last February.
