In China, a unique baby has taken her first solo steps in the public eye. She is Yuan Jing - the world's first giant panda born of artificial insemination at Beijing (Peking) Zoo.
SYNOPSIS: Yuan Jing is just nine months old (June 1979) and has only recently left her mother to start exploring her zoo home. Giant Pandas are rare animals found wild only in China and numbers have declined dramatically despite efforts to protect the species. Zoos in Britain Japan and the United States - the only nations outside China to own a pair of adult pandas - have tried unsuccessfully for some time to produce panda offspring. Beijing Zoo, however, has had ten naturally-born panda babies, and began artificial insemination experiments last year to further boost the birth rate. Thus Yuan Jing's shaky steps could mark a new path of hope for the future of her species...
