Background: A GROUP OF WEST GERMAN AND FOREIGN AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS EXHIBITING AT THE FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) THREATENED TO CLOSE THEIR STANDS TODAY UNLESS THE POLICE ALLOWED FREE ACCESS TO THE FAIR FOR ALL VISITORS. THEY ALSO DEMANDED THAT THE POLICE WITHDRAW FROM THE AREA AROUND THE FAIR. POLICE SEALED OFF THE EXHIBITION HALLS AFTER YESTERDAY'S STREET BATTLES BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS.

YESTERDAY'S STREET CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS IN FRANKFURT ERUPTED OUTSIDE THE CHURCH WHILE INSIDE THE PEACE PRIZE OF THE WEST GERMAN BOOK TRADE WAS AWARDED TO PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OF SENEGAL.

POLICE USED TEAR GAS AND TRUNCHEONS TO KEEP THE STUDENTS AT BAY OUTSIDE ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, WHERE THE CEREMONY WAS HELD. THE STUDENTS THREW STONES, BOTTLES, BAGS OF DYE AND ROTTEN APPLES AT THE POLICE.

SEVERAL STUDENTS, INCLUDING FRANCO-GERMAN STUDENT LEADER DANIEL COHN-BENDIT ("DANNY THE RED"), WERE ARRESTED, MR. COHN-BENDIT HAD CONDEMNED PRESIDENT SENGHOR AS A COLONIALIST.

EARLIER, MOUNTED POLICE GALLOPED FORWARD TO PREVENT DEMONSTRATORS MOLESTING THE AFRICAN HEAD OF STATE AND WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT HEINRICH LUBKE WHEN THEY ENTERED THE CHURCH BY A SIDE ENTRANCE.

POLICE USED WATER CANNON IN A BATTLE WITH STUDENTS OUTSIDE THE FRANKFURTHER HOF HOTEL. IT WAS AN HOUR BEFORE THE POLICE WERE ABLE TO FORCE THE STUDENTS BACK FAR ENOUGH TO PERMIT PRESIDENT SENGHOR'S CAR TO APPROACH SAFELY.

AT ONE POINT, THE STUDENT ALLEGEDLY SET FIRE TO A RADIO REPORTING CAR, BUT THE BLAZE WAS PUT OUT BY POLICE WHO THEN TURNED THE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ON TO THE STUDENTS.
