  • Description

KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN SAID YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THAT THE POPE'S FORTHCOMING PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND WAS A "LANDMARK NOT ONLY IN THE HISTORY OF THE HOLY LAND, BUT IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD AT LARGE."
AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN A JERUSALEM CINEMA, ATTENDED BY NEWSMEN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, THE 26-YEAR-OLD KING SAID THE POPE'S VISIT MIGHT HERALD A NEW ERA OF COOPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE TWO GREAT RELIGIONS, ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY.

IN ANSWER TO QUESTIONS, KING HUSSEIN SAID THE POPE'S VISIT WAS PURELY A PILGRIMAGE. HE CONSIDERED IT HAD NO POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS OR SIGNIFICANCE WHATEVER.

ASKED WHETHER HE FELT POPE PAUL'S VISIT MIGHT EASE RELATIONS BETWEEN JORDAN AND ISRAEL, THE KING REPLIED THAT THIS A PROBLEM OF INJUSTICE AND, UNTIL A JUST AND HONOURABLE SOLUTION WAS FOUND, HE COULD NOT SEE HOW RELATIONS COULD IMPROVE.

KING HUSSEIN WAS ALSO ASKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF MEDIATION BY POPE PAUL IN THE DISPUTE OVER ISRAELI PLANS TO DIVERT WATERS OF THE RIVER JORDAN. HE REPEATED HIS VIEW THAT THE POPE'S VISIT WAS A PURELY RELIGIOUS PILGRIMAGE, AND ADDED THAT HE HOPED SOME ANSWER MIGHT BE FOUND WHEN THE ARAB HEADS OF STATE MEET LATER THIS MONTH IN CAIRO.
