    Italian Communist Party Secretary Enrico Berlinguer fired first shots in the Italian provincial and regional election campaign at a Rome rally on Saturday (3 May).

    A crowd of 5,000 supporters, many of them young people, heard his say that the elections -- the first in which newly enfranchised 18-year-old can vote -- are crucial for Italy, still in the grips of an economic, social and political crisis.

    During his speech, Signor Berlinguer spoke about the forth coming visit to Italy by United States President Gerald Ford. He cast doubts on the ability of the present Italian government to faithfully represent the interests of the people to the Americans.
