  • Description

THE SWEDISH ARMY ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK IT WAS PLACING ORDERS FOR A NEW AMPHIBIOUS ARMOURED TROOP CARRIER WHICH CAN BE FITTED WITH ANTI-RADIATION PROTECTION IN THE EVENT OF ATOMIC WAR. THE CARRIER, ENTIRELY MADE IN SWEDEN, HAS JUST BEEN SHOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME AT A TRAINING GROUND NORTH OF STOCKHOLM.

A SPACE BETWEEN ITS TWO "SKINS" OF ARMOUR, INNER AND OUTER, CAN BE FILLED WITH ANTI-RADIATION MATERIAL AND ITS OCCUPANTS EQUIPPED WITH MASKS TO KEEP OUT RADIO-ACTIVE DUST. WITH A CREW OF TWO -- DRIVER PLUS GUNNER FOR A 20MM AUTOMATIC CANNON -- THE CARRIER TRANSPORTS NINE INFANTRYMEN, WHO CAN FIRE FROM INSIDE THROUGH HYDRAULICALLY OPENED SLITS.

WEIGHING 13.5 TONS, THE CARRIER IS POWERED BY A 270 H.P. DIESEL ENGINE, GIVING IT A TOP SPEED ON LAND OF 18 M.P.H. (30 K.P.H.). MOVING THROUGH WATER, SPEED IS REDUCED TO JUST OVER 4 M.P.H. (7 K.P.H.). TRIMMING TANKS, BILGE PUMPS AND A BOW-WAVE BREAKER ARE FITTED FOR STABILITY.

MASS PRODUCTION IS EXPECTED TO START IN 1965.
