Background: An emotional attack was made on the year-old rule of martial law in the Philippines by Benigno Aquino Jr., a former national Senator. Mr. Aquino is on trial, in front of a seven-man military tribunal, on charges of illegal possession of firearms.
His courtroom appearance on Monday (August 27) was his first since his detention just under a year ago. During his speech before a crowded courtroom, Mr. Aquino called his trial "an unconscionable mockery" and refused to take any active part in it. He also asked that his twelve de???ce lawyers be allowed to withdraw.
The tribunal permitted his request, and postponed the trial until next Wednesday (5 September).
Mr. Aquino is a bitter opponent of President Marcos, who declared martial law about a year ago.
