    SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS FOUNDATION, THE NATIONAL SCHOOL FOR MIDWIVES AND NURSES IN ABIDJAN, IS TURNING OUT A STEADY STREAM OF URGENTLY-NEEDED TRAINED NURSES FOR IVORY COAST'S MEDICAL SERVICES. AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR ON WEDNESDAY, A FURTHER 82 QUALIFIED MIDWIVES, NURSES AND MEDICAL AIDES GRADUATED FROM THE SCHOOL AND BEGAN THEIR CAREERS IN MEDICINE.

    THE SCHOOL HOLDS TWO EXAMINATIONS EVERY YEAR - FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN STUDENTS. MOST OF THOSE WHO GRADUATE ARE EARMARKED FOR SERVICE IN IVORY COAST'S INTERIOR REGIONS WHERE THERE IS A GREAT SHORTAGE OF TRAINED MEDICAL STAFF. BUT THE REPUTATION OF THE SCHOOL IS SUCH THAT IT NOW ALSO TAKES FOREIGN STUDENTS FOR TRAINING. AT PRESENT, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF TRAINEES FROM UPPER VOLTA. THERE ARE NOW 250 STUDENTS IN TRAINING.

    THIS YEAR'S MIDSUMMER EXAMINATIONS PRODUCED SIXTEEN MIDWIVES, 38 FULLY-QUALIFIED NURSES AND 23 MEDICAL ORDERLIES.

    AT THE CEREMONY ON WEDNESDAY WHEN THE SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS RECEIVED THEIR DIPLOMAS, THEY WERE CONGRATULATED BY THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SCHOOL, M. SIEFER, WHO HAD AS HIS GUESTS FOR THE DAY, THE IVORY COAST MINISTER OF HEALTH, M. BLAISE N'DIA KOFFI AND THE UPPER VOLTA AMBASSADOR TO IVORY COAST, AND THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, M. AMON TANOH.
