    THE DUKW-AN EX-ARMY AMPHIBIOUS CRAFT- WAS USED IN THE D-DAY LANDINGS. THE FAMILY - FORMER INSURANCE AGENT BILL PARRY, HIS WIFE ANITA AND THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS, AGED EIGHT AND SIX-ARE EMIGRATING TO AUSTRALIA.

    THIRTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD MR PARRY SOLD UP HIS HOUSE AND BELONGINGS IN STANLEY COMMON, ILKESTON, DERBYSHIRE, AND BOUGHT THE DUKW SECOND-HAND.

    HE PLANS TO TAKE UP TO A YEAR TO MAKE THE JOURNEY. MUCH OF THE ROUTE WILL BE BY LAND, BUT APART FROM TODAY'S CHANNEL CROSSING TO FRANCE, HE ALSO INTENDS TO TAKE IT ACROSS FIFTY MILES OF SEA NEAR NEW GUINEA.

    HARBOUR OFFICIALS AT FOLKESTONE HAD ADVISED HIM NOT TO ATTEMPT THE CHANNEL RUN. BUT THE FAMILY SET OFF UNDAUNTED. BEFORE HE LEFT, MR PARRY TOLD REPORTERS: 'I KNOW EVERYTHING WILL BE ALL RIGHT. WE WANT TO FIND ADVENTURE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND I HAVE TAKEN ALL THE PRECAUTIONS TO SATISFY OFFICIALS.'
