    TEN PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES AND 14 OTHERS INJURED IN FLOODS THAT HAVE FOLLOWED TORRENTIAL SEASONAL RAINS IN THE CENTRAL PART OF KYUSHU ISLAND, JAPAN.

    THE HEAVY RAINS CAUSED LANDSLIDES, SIMILAR TO ONE EARLIER NEAR TOKYO WHICH KILLED 24 PEOPLE.THE FLOODS INUNDATED THE LAND AND SWAMPED ROADS AND RAILWAYS.THE KUMAGAWA RIVER WHICH FLOWS THROUGH THE ISLAND BROKE ITS BANKS AND FLOODED 15,00 HOMES.TWO PEOPLE THERE WERE FEARED SWEPT AWAY.

    AT HITOYOSHI, 5,000 OF THE TOWN'S 9,000 HOMES WERE UNDER WATER AND MANY HOMES AT A NEARBY VILLAGE WERE WASHED AWAY BY THE SWIRLING WATERS.TWO COMPANIES OF THE JAPANESE SELF-DEFENCE FORCES WERE CALLED IN FROM THE OTHER PART OF THE ISLAND TO CARRY OUR RESCUE RELIEF WORK.
