Background: USULUTAN, EL SALVADOR AND FORT BRAGG, NORTH CAROLINA, U.S.A.

The El Salvadorean government has committed hundreds of troops, with artillery and armour support, to a major offensive against guerrilla strongholds in the town of Usulutan, in the east of the country. Rebels captured the town two weeks ago and later staged an orderly withdrawal. Now, some 2,500 guerrilla strongholds in the area. Once more, the civilian population of the town has been caught in the crossfire -- like the 30,000 others who have been reported killed since fighting began in El Salvador in October, 1979. Meanwhile, American military aid to the El Salvador government has been stepped up. As part of the aid programme, 450 men of a light infantry battalion have been airlifted to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to receive three months of specialist infantry training.
