A sure and certain way of getting your fish, this. La Dombe, a little place?
A sure and certain way of getting your fish, this. La Dombe, a little place about 50 km from Lyon, has a reputation for a special kind of fishing.
There are about eight hundred lakes in the district, which are all drained every two years on rotation basis. As the water goes down the fish are more or less stranded, and it is no difficult matter to concentrate the "catch" in a small puddle encircled by a net. The fish are then scooped up, put into baskets, and then carried away across the mud for weighing and loading on ??? a horse and cart.
When a lake is drained and fished it is usually sown with oats or corn for a season or so, before flooding again for fish production.
On average, about ten tons of fish are recovered from each lake.
