    RENEWED ANTI-ENGLISH PROTESTS SWEPT DELHI YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH DEMONSTRATORS BURNING ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SIGNBOARDS IN THE STREET, AN OPPOSITION MEMBER SETTING FIRE TO A COPY OF A GOVERNMENT BILL IN PARLIAMENT, AND FREQUENT CLASHES BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE.

    THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE STAGED IN OPPOSITION TO THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES AMENDMENT BILL, WHICH SEEKS TO RETAIN ENGLISH AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ALONGSIDE HINDI.

    THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT WHO BURNED A COPY OF THE BILL WAS MR HUKAM CHAND KACHWAI, OF THE RIGHT-WING HINDU JAN SANGH PARTY. FELLOW MEMBERS SNATCHED THE BURNING PAPERS FROM MR KACHWAI'S HANDS AND EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. THE INCIDENTS OCCURRED INSIDE THE LOWER HOUSE.

    IN THE STREETS OUTSIDE, MILITANT PRO-HINDI VOLUNTEERS SMASHED ENGLISH SIGNBOARDS AND THREW THEM ONTO BONFIRES ALONG WITH COPIES OF THE LANGUAGE BILL.

    ALL SCHOOL IN DELHI WERE CLOSED FOR THE DAY AND MANY OF THE MAIN SHOPPING AREAS STAGED A PROTEST SHUT-DOWN.

    THERE HAS BEEN A STORM OF PROTEST THROUGHOUT NORTHERN INDIA AGAINST ENGLISH AS AN ASSOCIATE LANGUAGE. ON TUESDAY (DECEMBER 5) PRIME MINISTER MRS INDIRA GANDHI INTERVENED TO APPEAL TO THE NATION NOT TO CREATE CONTROVERSY AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS ON THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE ISSUE.
