  • Description

Keith Mernickle of London held off Britain's amateur and professional Cyclo Cross champions and three Belgian riders to win the fourth round of the International Cycle Sport Trophy series in London on Sunday (January 5). Mernickle covered the damp, hilly fourteen mile course in one hour nine minutes four seconds ... one minute ahead of Jeff Morris, the British amateur champion. In third place was John Atkins, the British professional champion.

Mernickle took the lead in the third of the eleven laps. He gradually increased his advantage as the race progressed, and despite a puncture in the last quarter mile, was never seriously challenged.

The race was the fourth of the five round series for the International Cycle Sport Trophy. Mernickle took home first prize of GBP17 sterling (39 dollars). He is now favourite to win the series which carries first prize money of GBP28 sterling (64 dollars).

Three Belgian riders entered the event but were unable to keep up with the pace set by Mernickle and finished well back in the field.
