  • Description

French troops in the United Nations interim force in Lebanon on Wednesday (10 May) completed their redeployment around the ancient port of Tyre. A French officer said the new deployment, extending from the coastal area to the hilltops east of Tyre, would give the U.N. force wide control to block guerrilla infiltration into areas evacuated by Israeli forces. The move came a day after Norwegian U.N. forces had clashed with Palestinian guerrillas in the village of Kaukaba.

SYNOPSIS: A helicopter flying a wounded man into the U.N. field hospital at Nakoura, near the Mediterranean coast. revealed that the Norwegian contingent had run into trouble.

The injured soldier was a Norwegian lieutenant wounded in a clash with Palestinian guerrillas in the village of Kaukaba, where the U.N. force had dug in not far from Palestinian positions. Reuters reported eye-witnesses saying that, when the clash developed, other Palestinian forces further north poured their fire-power at the Norwegians.

The U.N. Commander, General Emmanuel Erskine, spoke briefly with the wounded man. General Erskine said his soldiers knew they could be wounded. His forces did not need an extensive intelligence network, because infiltration was their main concern. Meanwhile, the commander of the Christian Phalangists in South Lebanon, Major Saad Haddad, said he had offered to help the Norweigians, but was told the situation was under control.
