  • Description

In Bucharest, President Nicolae Ceausescu, President of the State Council of the Socialist Republic of Rumania, received on Monday (August 27) a parliamentary delegation from the Arab Republic of Egypt. The delegation, headed by the President of the People's Assembly, Dr Hafoz Badawi, was paying an official visit to Rumania at the invitation of the Grand National Assembly.

In a cordial atmosphere, President Coausescu and Dr Badawi discussed the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries and their continued development, in the spirit of the previous talks held by M. Ceausescu and President Anwar Sadat.

Rumania is the only East European nation to maintain diplomatic relations with Israel after the 1967 Middle-East war. This, however, has not impeded links with the Arab states and in May 1972, President Ceausescu was personally responsible for an attempt to initiate mediation in the Middle-East. After talks with President Sadat in Cairo, he invited the Israeli Prime Minister Mrs Golda Meir, to Bucharest for negotiations -- the first official visit by an Israeli Prime Minister to a Communist country.
