  • Description

Archbishop Antonios Khreish was on Monday (3 February) elected Christian Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and all the Orient at the Patriarchal seat of Bkerki, near Beirut.

He succeeded Cardinal Paul Meoushi, who died on 11 January after several months of illness.

Archbishop Khreish was born at Ein Ibol in south Lebanon. He was ordained in 1930 and became Bishop of Tartous, on the Syrian coast, in 1950.

Archbishop Khreish served as Patriarchal Vicar under Patriarch Menoushi and his predecessor Patriarch Arida.

The new Patriarch was elected by an electoral college of 14 Maronite Bishops. If they had failed to elect a successor within 15 days of convening, the Vatican would have been free to name the new Patriarch.

It is estimated there are one million Maronites -- Roman Catholics following the Syro-Antiochen rite -- in Lebanon and an equal number outside the country.
