  • Description

SUPPORTERS OF BRITAIN'S ANTI-NUCLEAR COMMITTEE OF 100 THREW THEMSELVES BODILY AGAINST ROWS OF SHOULDERS-TO-SHOULDER POLICEMEN IN CENTRAL LONDON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN A SERIES OF "HANDS OFF CUBA" DEMONSTRATIONS. BY THE EVENING OF A DAY WHICH BEGAN WITH AN ORDERLY PROTEST MARCH TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, MORE THAN 150 PEOPLE HAD BEEN ARRESTED. PROTEST MARCHES IN TWO PROVINCIAL CITIES ENDED IN OVER 100 PEOPLE BEING ARRESTED. MOST WERE FINED FOR OBSTRUCTION.

THE MAIN DEMONSTRATION BEGAN IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE WHERE THE COMMITTEE OF 100 HAD BEEN BANNED BY THE MINISTRY OF WORKS FROM HOLDING A MEETING. SEVERAL PEOPLE TRIED TO SPEAK TO A CROWD OF 3,000 THROUGH LOUD-HAILERS - AND WERE ARRESTED. THEN HUNDREDS OF DEMONSTRATORS - MEN AND WOMEN - STREAMED INTO WHITEHALL INTENDING TO MAKE THEIR PROTEST AT ADMIRALTY HOUSE WHERE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR MACMILLAN, WAS SPENDING THE WEEKEND. THERE THE CUBAN BLOCKADE PROTESTERS MET A BLOCKADE DESIGNED SPECIALLY FOR THEM - A STRONG CORDON OF POLICE. THOSE WHO WERE NOT ARRESTED WERE THEN PUSHED BACK INTO TRAFALGAR SQUARE.

AFTER RE-GROUPING THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED OFF THROUGH THE WEST END TO GOVERNOR SQUARE AND THE AMERICAN EMBASSY. BUT THEY FOUND THAT THERE TOO A METROPOLITAN POLICE "BLOCKADE" AWAITED. AND AGAIN DEMONSTRATORS WERE CARRIED OR MARCHED TO POLICE VANS.

BY NIGHTFALL ALL WAS QUIET AGAIN. BOTH "SIDES" WITHDREW IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS WERE PLANNED IN CENTRAL LONDON TODAY.
