    THIRTEEN TEAMS HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED BY COUNTRIES COMPETING IN THE CELEBRATED TOUR DE BELGIQUE CYCLING RACE. THE FIRST STAGE OF THIS BEGAN IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM TODAY (2 APRIL) WITH BELGIUM HOLDING HIGH HOPES FOR ITS FIRST WIN IN FIVE YEARS.

    BELGIUM, SAY THE EXPERTS, HAS EVERY CHANCE OF DOING WELL WITH BOTH THE WORLD CHAMPION EDDY MERCKX (NO. 1) AND FORMER WORLD CHAMPION RIK VAN LOOY (NO. 42) RIDING FOR THEM. A HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT RIDERS TOOK PART IN THE FIRST STAGE FROM BRUSSELS TO BERTRIX, RIDING IN THIRTEEN TEAMS OF EIGHT. THEY WERE DUE TO COVER THE 212 KILOMETRE JOURNEY (132 MILES) IN JUST OVER FIVE HOURS.

    A STRONG HEADWIND WORKED AGAINST THE COMPETITORS IN TODAY'S RACE SLOWING THEM DOWN CONSIDERABLY. SEEN ON FILM ARE CHARLY CROSSKOST OF FRANCE, JEAN-LOUIS BODIN OF FRANCE, JOS HUYSMANS OF BELGIUM, WARD SELS OF BELGIUM, VAN HARINGS OF HOLLAND, B. VAN DE KERCHOVE OF BELGIUM, ANDRE PLANCKAERT OF BELGIUM, WILLY BECKLANT OF BELGIUM, AND THE WINNER OF TODAY'S STAGE, HERMAN VAN SPRINGEL OF BELGIUM. THERE ARE ALSO RIDERS IN THE RACE FROM ITALY, WEST GERMANY, GREAT BRITAIN, AND LUXEMBOURG.

    DURING THE NEXT THREE DAYS, UNTIL 5 APRIL, THE RACE WILL CONTINUE -- ON WEDNESDAY FROM BERTRIX TO VERVIERS, ON THURSDAY FROM SPA TO GENK, AND ON FRIDAY FROM GENK TO BRUSSELS, COVERING A TOTAL OF 793 KILOMETRES (ABOUT 500 MILES).
