  • Description

The Junior Flyweight World Champion Boxer, Luis "Lumumba" Estaba, has retained his title.

SYNOPSIS: Estaba began strongly against Mexico's valentin Martinez who was at a distinct disadvantage, in size and reach.

Martinez soaked up heavy punishment from the Champion but still kept going. In the fifth round Estaba opened up a cut over Martinez' eye with a barrage of power punches.

Estaba had kept up the pressure in the sixth round putting Martinez down at one stage for the count of eight. The World Boxing Council fight took place in the Caracas Bull Ring. As the fight progressed it took on the character of a bull-fight with the plucky Mexican taking the part of the bull.

Martinez was still on his feet in the tenth round with blood pouring down his face. A doctor examined him at the end of the tenth round and it was all over. The doctor ordered Martinez's seconds to throw in the towel, conceding the fight to Estaba. It was Estaba's 34th win.

The winner's purse was 30,000 dollars (more than GBP 18,000 sterling). Estaba who is 35, said only "will power" kept him going.
