  • Description

MEMBERS OF TANZANIA'S ONLY PARTY, THE TANGANYIKA NATIONAL UNION (TANU), YESTERDAY PLEDGED THEIR SUPPORT TO THE NEW POLICY OF SOCIALISM AND SELF-RELIANCE. IN HIS ADDRESS TO THE TANU ELDERS, PRESIDENT NYERERE ANNOUNCED THE FINAL TAKE-OVERS AT THE END OF A WEEK OF NATIONALISATION OF BUSINESS IN THE COUNTRY.

PRESIDENT NYERERE TOLD THE ELDERS THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES, MAJOR IMPORT-EXPORT BUSINESSES, AND SISAL ESTATES WERE TO BE TAKEN OVER BY THE GOVERNMENT. THE ANNOUNCEMENT BROUGHT THE COMPLETION OF THE GOVERNMENT'S PUBLIC OWNERSHIP PROGRAMME, AND TODAY PRESIDENT NYERERE SAID IN A SUNDAY NEWSPAPER THAT THE KEY POSITIONS OF THE ECONOMY HAD BEEN SECURED FOR THE NATION IN THE SAME WAY AS DURING WAR AN ARMY OCCUPIED THE SITES WHICH DOMINATED THE COUNTRYSIDE.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE NATIONALISATION OF BANKS, BREWERIES AND OTHER BUSINESSES WAS ANNOUNCED. BUT WHILE THE LIST OF FIRMS FOR STATE OWNERSHIP IS NOW COMPLETE, IT WILL TAKE MONTHS TO TIE UP THE LOOSE ENDS.
