  • Description

The singles Final in the Colgate International Women's Tennis Tournament took place in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday (5 December) between Betty Stove of Holland, and Martina Navratilova, formerly of Czechoslovakia.

SYNOPSIS: Miss. Navratilova had won the first set 7-5, and in this - the second set - she never let her doubles partner get into gear. Miss. Stove - serving here - had entered the tournament as fifth seed. At 30 years old she is the President of the Women's Tennis Association. Miss. Navratilova is ten years Betty Stove's junior, and she defected to the United States fourteen months ago.

Stove still continued to make many unforced errors in the second set, while Navratilova's stroke-play was immaculate. In the first set the Czech girl had been upset by several line calls against her. At one stage in the sixth game of that set, she had thrown her racquet to the ground in anger. But she had pulled herself out of the doldrums, to win the second and final set 6-2. It had taken her 63 minutes to beat her close friend.

Together with the trophy, Navratilova collected 22,000 dollars (13,414 sterling) in prize money. It was this forehand that clinched it. Betty Stove's prize money amounted to 11,000 dollars (GBP6,707 sterling).
