  • Description

A winter storm moved up the southern Atlantic coast of the United States Tuesday (5 February)...causing considerable beach erosion and flooding at high tide.

The storm battered beaches from Florida to North Carolina..and beach communities in Jacksonville, Florida, patched bulkhead breaks with sandbags.Emergency workers threw into the surf anything they could find...including wrecked automobiles...as a barrier against the rampaging tides. In mode cases, however, the power of the ocean was greater than the bulkheads. After each high tide, workers renewed efforts to stay the next onslaught.

The storm lost much of its punch overnight...but weather experts said it could build up again.Meanwhile...residents of the coast north of Florida...in Georgia and North and South Carolina...are taking no chances...and the sandbagging continued through Wednesday.
