  • Description

The West German Bundestag (Lower House) met in special session in the capital, Bonn, today (Tuesday) to debate the nation-wide student disturbances which rocked the country at Easter. During the debate the West German Chancellor, Kurt Kiesinger, made an impassioned appeal to the nation not to destroy West Germany's hard won credit abroad by supporting the extreme-right wing National Democrats in next year's general election.

The parliamentary meeting was overshadowed by the recent election success of the National Democratic Party. Ironically, commentators attribute some of the party's success to backlash support stirred up by the riots.

Chancellor Kiesinger told parliament that the NPD's unprecedented success in gaining 9.8 per cent of the poll in Sunday's Baden-Wuerttemberg state election had been widely misinterpreted abroad.

He said he did not want to play down the danger, but maintained that the party's success did not mean a Nazi revival. Most of the NDP's support came from protest votes, be claimed.

Earlier in the debate Interior Minister Ernest Benda urged greater centralisation of West Germany's regionalised police organisation to combat nation-wide disturbances on the scale of the Easter demonstrations.
