  • Description

Hearses drove through the sleepy town of Koenigs-Wusterhausen today (Tues) bearing away the remains of 156 people who died in the second worst air disaster in civil aviation history.

The peace of the woodland town was shattered yesterday when a Soviet-built airliner broke apart minutes after takeoff form East Berlin's Schoenafeld Airport.

Police officials remained tight-lipped today as experts picked over the wreckage of the four-engined Illyushin-six-two, long haul jet.

Many officials expressed amazement that the death toll had not been higher -- the aircraft came down only a few hundred yards from thirty houses, and a railway station which, at the time of the crash, was filled with travellers.
