Welcomed as "the Standard-bearer of the Libyan Arab Revolution" Col. Mummar Gaddafi, libyan head of state, arrived at Nouakchott airport on Tuesday (February 15) for a three-day official visit to Mauritania. He was greeted by Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah, government leaders, diplomats and thousands of people who lined the two-mile route from the airport to the Presidential Palace.
In the course of his visit the Libyan leader was to make two appeals for a great Union of Arab Nations, stretching from the Atlantic and Mediterranean to the Arabian Gulf.
SYNOPSIS: The flags of Libya and Mauritania decked out Nouakchott Airport on Tuesday for the arrival in Mauritania of the Libyan head of State, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
The Colonel, starting a three-day official visit to Mauritania, was welcomed by President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania. A 21-gun salute was fired followed by the playing of both national anthems.
The Libyan leader then inspected the Guard of Honour, and went on to meet Mauritian Government leaders, senior officials and diplomats who were there in force to greet him.
The two heads of State them met privately for 15 minutes before leaving the airport.
Thousands of enthusiastic members of the ruling Mauritanian People's party lined the streets for the two-mile journey to the Presidential Palace; and the route was decorated with triumphal arches and slogans praising Colonel Gaddafi as "the Standard-bearer of the Libyan Arab revolution."
