  • Description

Still roaming the waters of the eastern Mediterranean, the American 6th Fleet has now split into a number of small units and one of these recently visited the Turkish port of Izmur.

Loading the group is the guided missile cruiser, Canberra, seen lying just off the breakwater at Izmur with several smaller ships in attendance.

Our cameraman filmed the American warship from the Municipal Hall Square; from higher in the town with the Esref Pasha mosque minarets and the old watch tower in the foreground; and from the battlements of the Kadife Kale - the old forst overlooking Izmur.

While two Turkish officers waited on shore, a boat carrying Commander Stephensen and Captain Lowalon brought the two men to the shore.

Later, a larger craft brought several soldiers ashore from one of the transports for a short training spell and several of these are seen with the Ataturk statue in the background.

Many of them could not resist the opportunity to have a shoe-shine while on shore.
