  • Description

The first batch of officer cadets from the Bangladesh Military Academy graduated in a colourful and impressive ceremony at the Mainamati Cantonment, Comilla, on Saturday (11 January). Guest of honour at the one and a half hour ceremony was the Prime Minister, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The smartly turned out graduates, who had just completed a year's training, drew sustained applause from the crowd as they drilled in the Mainamati Stadium.

A highlight of the passing out parade was the presentation of the sword of honour -- the Academy's highest prize -- to Senior Under Officer Zahirul Alam.

In his address to the cadets and guests, the Prime Minister said he had always struggled for the establishment of a military academy during the years when the country was part of Pakistan. Only the valiant fight by the people of Bangladesh during the "war of liberation" had made it possible for the establishment of the academy.

Sheikh Mujib also urged all civil and military officials in the country to carry out their duties to the people ... whose taxes paid their salaries. He said they should think of themselves as servants ... not masters ... of the people.
