Background: Three people were killed and an estimated 200 were injured when fireworks exploded among a crowd at a festival in Valencia today (Saturday). Thousands of people watching the display fled when the fireworks fell among them. In their panic some of the people ran over the tops of cars, while others fell and were trampled.
The event is called the Fallas Fire Festival. During the winter, the people build papier mache "fallas" or statues. The images may be satirical, humorous, or political. All of these are burned at midnight on the 19th of March, the day of Patron Saint Joseph. This year more than 2500 statues went up in flames. The burning signifies that waste wood is no longer needed for heat and light in winter. Thousands of people from Spain and abroad are drawn to the festival, and this year special tourist ships were run from Argentina and Uruguay.
