    HIGH WINDS MADE THE TASK A DIFFICULT ONE FOR WORKMEN HANDLING THE 30 TON ALUMINIUM FUNNEL, THE LAST MAJOR INSTALLATION JOB TO BE MADE ON THE 22,000 TON SHAW SAVILL LINER. THE FINAL PAINTING OF PASSENGER AND CREW CABINS HAD STARTED, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC ROOMS AND RESTAURANTS WELL ADVANCED.

    "NORTHERN STAR" IS SCHEDULED TO SAIL FROM SOUTHAMPTON WITH 1400 PASSENGERS ON HER FIRST ROUND THE WORLD VOYAGE ON JULY 10, VISITING SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, PANAMA AND THE WEST INDIES. BEHINDS HER SHE WILL LEAVE SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS FACING THE BRITISH SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY. WITH NO OTHER PASSENGER LINERS PLANNED IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, SHIPYARDS IN BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND ARE FACED WITH INCREASING COMPETITION AND A SHARP FALL IN PRODUCTION.

    OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR, JAPAN RETAIN THE LEAD SHE HAS OVER BRITAIN, HER NEAREST RIVAL, BUILDING 23 PER CENT OF THE WORLD'S NEW SHIPS. BY COMPARISON BRITAIN - WHO BUILT 34 PER CENT OF WORLD SHIPPING IN 1938 - HAD SLID DOWN TO 15 PER CENT, DESPITE THE COMPLETION OF TWO PASSENGER LINERS, OIL TANKERS AND BULK CARRIERS. THIS DECREASE IN PRODUCTION AMOUNTED TO NEARLY 140,000 TONS.
