    Background: THE ISRAELI ARMY CARRIED OUT ROUTINE PATROLS TODAY (SUNDAY) IN THE BORDER AREA WHERE SYRIAN FORCES CLASHED WITH THEM ON FRIDAY. THERE WAS NO FURTHER INTERFERENCE FROM MORTARS AND THE SITUATION IN THE AREA - IN UPPER GALILEE - IN THE NORTHWEST OF THE COUNTRY WAS REPORTED QUIET.

    A COMMUNAL SETTLEMENT - KIBBUTZ DAN - AND A NEARBY FARMING VILLAGE, CAME UNDER FIRE DURING THE CLASH AND THE WORKERS AND FAMILIES TOOK REFUGE IN UNDERGROUND SHELTERS. A POWER STATION AND A TRACTOR HUT WERE BURNT OUT AND SEVERAL BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED.

    THESE INCLUDED HOMES, A MUSEUM, THE COMMUNIST HALL AND A GRAIN SILO. THE CLASH LASTED TWO HOURS. THE ISRAELI CASUALTIES NUMBERED THREE SOLDIERS KILLED, 12 SOLDIERS WOUNDED AND TWO CIVILIANS SLIGHTLY INJURED.

    (THE SECURITY COUNCIL IN NEW YORK IS EXPECTED TO CONSIDER SYRIAN CHARGES OF AGGRESSION BY ISRAEL TOMORROW. ISRAEL HAS SENT COUNTER-CHARGES, BLAMING THE SYRIANS FOR AN "INCESSANT, DELIBERATE AND UNPROVOKED ATTACK.")
