  • Description

Most Spaniards were pre-occupied with their first elections this week for more than 40 years, but floods, gale force winds and the lowest June temperatures for a 100 years brought chaos to the country's northern Basque provinces on Monday (13 June).

SYNOPSIS: Roads were cut, railway communications stopped, or drastically slowed, and schools closed after eight rivers broke their banks. Asua was one of the worst hit towns and heavy earthmoving equipment was used to clear silted roads and drains. Rubber dinghies were used to rescue people trapped by the water.

Large areas of Bilbao were brought to a standstill and the port was paralysed. Most of the city was blacked out as the River Nervion rushed through the centre and overran the railway station. Only a small number of workers managed to report to their factories. Despite the extent of the flooding, a 50-year old man who drowned while trying to evacuate his family from a house in a nearby village was the only victim.
