  • Description

Rioting in the Kowloon area of Hong Kong entered its third day on Saturday (13 May) when large crowds poured into the streets of the San Po Kong industrial district after the curfew, imposed since the trouble began, had been lifted. As rampaging Chinese youths started street bonfires housewives began hoarding foodstuffs and other essential commodities.

Riot police moved into the area with tear gas, batons and riot guns in a bid to end the disturbances which began on Thursday (11 May) following a demonstration by striking workers who had been locked out of a plastic flower factory.

In Friday's rioting an 18-year-old Chinese youth was killed. By Saturday more than 30 people had been injured and about 250 others arrested.

On Saturday a helicopter hovering over the area reported that fire had broken out in one of the blocks of flats on the Wong Tai Sin Resettlement Estate near San Po Kong. Firemen, working under police protection, quickly had the fire under control.

Rioters in another block of flats threw stones, bottles and flaming debris at the police who eventually charged the building.

The People's Republic of China today (Monday) protested to Britain against fascist atrocities by Hong Kong authorities against Chinese workers and residents, the New China News Agency reported.
