  • Description

Traffic was stopped and crowds gathered to watch as digging began in Said Zaghloul Square, Alexandria. Egypt, Apr 21, for the tomb of Alexander the Great, who founded the city 23 centuries ago.

With the help of Alexandria's Greek community, Mr. Stelio Koumoutsos; a waiter by profession, has raised GBP500 to finance the work, being carried out by the United Arab Republic's Department of Antiquities.

Mr. Koumoutsos, who claims that documents in his family's possession for generations indicate Said Zaghloul Square as the site of the lost tomb, has been trying for 20 years to get permission for an excavation. He was regarded as an eccentric until last year, when experts in archaeology and Ptolemaic studies at Alexandria University decided that the documents were worthy of serious consideration.

Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC and the fact that he was buried in Alexandria is testified by many ancient writers. It is thought that the present excavations may also lead to the discovery of Cleopatra's sepulchre.
