  • Description

In India, more than five hundred Iranian Moslem students marched through the streets of the capital, New Delhi, on Monday (9 October) to demonstrate their sympathy with the leader of the Shi'ite Moslems, Ayotollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Their march took them to both the Iraqi and Iranian embassies.

SYNOPSIS: Mullah Khomeini is the spiritual leader of the Shi'ite Moslems, who make up nine tenths of Iran's population. The demonstrators, -- wearing black masks so as not to be identified -- went first to the Iraqi embassy. They believed their leader to be kept under house arrest in Iraq, and claimed his life was threatened. The demonstrators were carrying banners with anti-Iraqi slogans and demanded the release of Mullah Khomeini.

Ironically, Mullah Khomeini had left Iraq three days before (Friday, 6 October) to live in France. Reports said that pressure from Teheran finally ended his fifteen-year exile in Iraq.

Mullah Khomeini is described as the Shah's religious enemy. In a statement circulated in Iran on September the fourteenth, he called for Moslems to show passive resistance, and for the army to defy the Shah. The Mullah wants a return to the constitution of 1906, under which a Council of five Mullahs would vet all legislation to ensure that it confirmed with Islamic Law.

The demonstrators protested against what they called the Shah's oppression of the Islamic faith. They saw the Shah's recent declaration of Martial Law in Iran as his intent to continue the policies they oppose. The demonstration was noisy, but peaceful.
