  • Description

London adds its quota of plenty and glitter to the Christmas scene.

Young and old crowd world famous shopping thoroughfares like Oxford Street to gaze fascinated into window aglow and alive with myriad attractions. Inside Father and son watch entranced as the model railways operate like something from the mythical isle of Lilliput.

But perhaps one of the most lively and fascinating streets in the whole of London is just off Middlesex Street. A street to which the whole world comes at some time or other. Petticoat Lane, London's most famous street market - and on a Sunday in the few weeks just before Christmas, London's Busiest.

It wasn't always like this, with stalls packed close and thousands packing the narrow way. In the days of James I it was a fashionable country thoroughfare where in a fine house Don Gondomar, the then Spanish Ambassador, made his home.

What can you buy there to-day? Anything and everything from a canteen of cutlery to a house-coat, a china elephant to a suit of clothes. But Petticoat Lane is not to be outdone by its West-End brothers. What about this sputnik balloon, for instance?
There are bargains of all kinds - but the customer very often has to bargain, too. Don't offer a quid, he's not asking fifteen bob, just give him half a dollar and he'll send it home in a taxi.
