  • Description

COLONEL JOHN GLENN, WHO HOPES TO BE AMERICA'S FIRST MAN IN ORBIT, PAID A SURPRISE INFORMAL VISIT TO PRESIDENT KENNEDY AT THE WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON, FEB 5.

WHILE THE PRESIDENT ROCKED BACK AND FORTH IN HIS COMFORTABLE ARMCHAIR, COLONEL GLENN GAVE AN ACCOUNT OF HIS ORDEAL JAN 27 WHEN HE SPENT FIVE-AND-A-QUARTER TENSE HOURS SEALED IN A SPACE CAPSULE ONE-HUNDRED-AND-TWENTY FEET UP IN THE NOSE CONE OF THE ROCKET THAT WAS TO HAVE CARRIED HIM INTO THREE ORBITS AROUND THE EARTH. THE ATTEMPT WAS POSTPONED THROUGH BAD WEATHER AND THE DISCOVERY OF AN ELECTRICAL FAULT. IT WAS ANNOUNCED FEB 6 THAT ANOTHER ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE FEB 14.

THE PRESIDENT ASKED THE 40-YEAR OLD ASTRONAUT WHETHER THE WORLD-WIDE PUBLICITY AFFECTED HIM IN ANY WAY. COLONEL GLENN SAID HE DID NOT MIND IT, BUT HE THOUGHT THERE WAS TOO MUCH PERSONAL PUBLICITY, AND NOT ENOUGH ON THE SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS OF "PROJECT MERCURY".

LEAVING THE WHITE HOUSE, COLONEL GLENN PASSEDVUNNOTICED BY A GROUP OF "BAN THE BOMB" DEMONSTRATORS PICKETING OUTSIDE THE PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE.
