E.D.A., the Greek United Democratic Left party - regarded as the cover for the banned?

  • Description

E.D.A., the Greek United Democratic Left party - regarded as the cover for the banned Greek Communist Party - held a four-day congress in Athens, Greece, starting Nov.28.

Delegates from several European countries - including Albania, Britain, France, Italy and Yugoslavia - were to have attended the gathering, but refusal of entry visas at Athens airport prevented them from so doing.

E.D.A. is the biggest Parliamentary Opposition party in Greece. In May last year it polled over 25% of the total General Election votes, obtaining 79 seats in Parliament.

Many Greek Communists are associated with the party, including Glezos the party's National Organiser.

On the first day E.D.A. President Joannis Passalides called on all members to 'welcome' President Eisenhower - who will go to Greece later this year during his Europe and Asia tour - with slogans deprecating the setting up of missile bases in Greece.

Another negative result from the congress was a new slogan - 'Down with Grivas'.
