  • Description

ARAB NATIONALISTS HAVE HOISTED THEIR OWN FLAGS IN ADEN'S CRATED TOWN DISTRICT, CHALLENGING BRITISH FORCES BASED THERE TO AN EVENTUAL SHOWDOWN. MEMBERS OF THE EGYPTIAN-BACKED FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF OCCUPIED SOUTH YEMEN (FLOSY) AND THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT (NLF) HAVE BOTH DISTRIBUTED LEAFLETS CLAIMING TO HAVE FOUGHT FIERCE GUN BATTLES WITH BRITISH TROOPS. IN FIGHTING LAST TUESDAY 12 BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE KILLED, AND ONLY ONE MAN - FUSILIER JOHN STOREY - ESCAPED.

THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER IN ADEN, SIR HUMPHREY TREVELYAN AND HIS TOP MILITARY ADVISORS HAVE BEEN DEBATING THE ADVISABILITY OF SENDING BRITISH TROOPS BACK INTO CRATER. THE TROOPS WOULD RESUME THEIR ROLE OF HELPING LOCAL CIVIL POLICE TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER.

WHILE THE DEBATE GOES ON, OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE CONTINUE. YESTERDAY A COMPANY OF THE ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS EXCHANGED FIRE FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS BEFORE BEING RELIEVED BY MEN OF THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.

THE ARMY'S POLICY IN THE AREA IS TO USE "MINIMUM FORCE", PARTICULARLY AS THE DATE FOR INDEPENDENCE, JANUARY 9 NEXT YEAR, DRAWS NEAR.

ONE OF THE WORST OUTBREAKS GAME LAST WEEK, DURING THE POLICE MUTINY, WHEN 12 MEN WERE KILLED IN AN AMBUSH IN CRATER.

FUSILIER JOHN STOREY SAW THE OTHERS DIE. HE MANAGED TO ESCAPE AND HID FOR A WHILE IN AN ARAB FLAT. WHEN HE WAS TOLD THE POLICE WERE SEARCHING FOR HIM HE LEAPT FROM THE WINDOW, AND EVENTUALLY MADE HIS WAY TO THE PROTECTION OF LOYAL POLICE OFFICERS.

HE IS NOW RECUPERATING IN A MILITARY HOSPITAL IN ADEN.
