  • Description

Celebrating the eight anniversary of the Republic, Indians from all parts of Old and New Delhi flocked to main city driveway to watch a two-hour procession which included military units, young people, cultural organizations, production workers and peasants from the fields.

First to arrive at the saluting base was the Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, who was making an early inspection of all the arrangements. Passing the rows of spectators, he was warmly greeted by the thousands who line the route - including vast numbers of schoolchildren who called out their greetings to "Uncle Nehru".

Riding in solitary splendour and flanked by his colourful bodyguard the President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, arrived at the saluting base and took his place as the head of the long procession swung into view.

Showing a strong British influence in dress and drill, the long column of troops was headed by squadrons of Sherman and Centurion tanks - the Centurions mounted on the trailers of tank transporters.

Following the armoured groups come the more colourful cavalry groups and the stately Ganga Jaialmer Risala (Camel Corps).

Youth groups, gaily dressed elephants, contingents from various different states, and women dancers formed the rest of the parade.

The week is also being marked by a Folk Dance Festival in New Delhi given by teams rom all parts of India. Proceeds from this festival are to be given to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
